To save or to spend?

Posted by Maria Keiser on February 16, 2009

If you turn on the television or read a newspaper, all we hear about today is the state of the economy.  Foreclosures, bankruptcies, unemployment, businesses closing etc…   We cannot go one day without hearing about the state of our economy.

The strange thing is that the conversations are so extreme.  A few months back I had a conversation with a business owner whose solution for surviving the recession is to stop all marketing, fire his sales people, and use the substandard version of his current product.  Another business owner told me that he was taking advantage of every marketing opportunity that came his way, (advertising, trade shows, promotional products, etc…).  When I asked both how their approach was working out, they both told me, “extremely well”.  So we have 2 extremes, one is to save all the resources for survival, the other is to spend the resources for growth.   My question is which approach will get you through this recession?  Is it that extreme, or is there a happy medium?
